The raised cup is the oldest ceremonial form in Japanese ceramics, inherited from Sue ware — the sixth-century ancestor of Bizen. Fired away from the direct flame path, this piece received almost no ash. What remains is the clay itself: coarse-grained, matte, faintly metallic, exactly the surface that makes wabi-sabi a discipline rather than a decoration.
