Ao-Bizen — 'blue Bizen' — is not a glaze. It is an accident of place. Only vessels buried deepest in the climbing kiln, where the pine flame consumes every last atom of oxygen, reduce their iron so completely that the surface turns from earth-red to slate blue, sometimes to lapis. Fewer than one piece in twenty leaves the kiln this way. The facets on this flask are cut by hand with a bamboo blade while the clay is leather-hard, so the flame reads each plane differently: some faces go indigo, others hold their ash-gold sheen.
