Unglazed Bizen is microscopically porous. Air passes through the wall, softening tannin in tea and sharpness in sake. This is not folklore — it is the reason Bizen has served tea masters since the Muromachi period.

The science of taste
Why tea tastes rounder from Bizen.
Fired at 1,200–1,300°C without glaze, the wall of a Bizen vessel keeps a network of micro-pores. Air moves slowly through it, oxidising harsh tannins in tea and softening the edge of sake. Iron in the Okayama clay also binds part of the bitterness. Tea masters have used this since the Muromachi period — it is chemistry, not folklore.

Every Tanchenki design begins as research — sutra iconography, Kalachakra proportion, thangka colour convention — and ends as a cushion cover you can throw in the wash. Original artwork, independently copyrighted, never lifted from a temple photograph.
