Molten pine ash settles on the shoulder of the cup during the second week of firing and vitrifies into small silver-white points — goma, 'sesame'. Against the reduced blue body they read as a night sky. Guinomi are the most intimate objects in Japanese ceramics: they are chosen by hand, not by eye, and this one is weighted so the rim meets the lip before the fingers register the base.
