Sangiri happens where charcoal collapses against the wall of a vessel and smothers it. The buried section reduces to grey and blue-black; the exposed section oxidises to red-brown. The border between them is a horizon line drawn by fire. Jars of this scale occupy the lowest chamber of the climbing kiln and require the entire fourteen-day cycle to sinter through — the reason a single kiln consumes more than one hundred tons of red pine.
